Code Installation Overview

This page provides links which will allow you to download the current revision of of our 3D browser. Currently, the browser is only available for Intel 386 (486, Pentium) compatible machines running MS Windows and MS Windows NT. This software may work on DOS based machines as well. Instructions are available for installation and setup procedures for the Netscape Web browser. The current IVRP browser may also work for other browsers which support external viewers, however, only Netscape is directly supported at this time.

Link to Viewer

The browser software is contained in a self extracting executable file which was generated by PKZIP software. The executable will expand into three files in a subdirectory, the browser software IVRPV.EXE & AV.EXE, two copies of the video driver VD256.RVD, and a subdirectory for temporary file storage (TEMP). For now, these files must reside in the directory C:\IVRP (sorry about this). As the directory information is stored in the archive file, the archive should be expanded from the root directory on the C drive (C:\). Click here to download this file (VIEWER00.EXE, about 100Kbytes). Extraction is accomplished by executing the file with the -d parameter (type VIEWER00.EXE -d from C:\).

Setup

Once the file VIEWER00.EXE is transferred to C:\ on your local machine, edit your autoexec.bat file to add C:\IVRP to your PATH variable. You may have to reboot to get this to take effect. For Windows NT users, the PATH environmental variable may be edited from System applet in the Control Panel application of the Main group. When this is done, Netscape must be configured to accept IVRPV.EXE as its viewer for VR files. Unfortunately, my Web server is not properly configured to allow the automatic viewing of a novel file type (will be fixed soon). Instead, you must replace the .WAV player with view the VR files. While this change is in effect, you will not be able to play .WAV sound files through Netscape, however the playback of .au and .aiff files will not be effected.

To reconfigure your .WAV player, first select Options/Preferences from the main menu bar. Then select Helper Applications from the Set Preferences drop down list. Now select the item labeled audio/x-wav. Then move the cursor to the Launch Application field of the Action box. Make sure that the Launch Application radio button is selected. Replace the following field with C:\IVRP\IVRPV.EXE. Finally, select the OK button to complete the change. That's all there is to it. This process will be simplified once the next set of software is released, and my ISP's server bug is fixed.

View A Scene

This viewer is in a "pre-alpha" state so don't expect too much of it. While eventually we hope to support several virtual worlds, at the moment we only have one simple example available for testing. Please take a look at it and send us your comments!
